Was talking to Mike about Google’s stats for websites, and we thought it would be cool to see the reach for the biggest YP sites in the USA. Cut-off was 0.1% reach:
| Site | Unique Visitors | Reach |
| City Search | 7.4 M | 3.2% |
| YellowPages.com | 6.8 M | 3% |
| SuperPages.com | 6.2 M | 2.7% |
| Yelp | 4.6 M | 2% |
| Local.com | 3.2 M | 1.4% |
| MerchantCircle | 2.6 M | 1.1% |
| InsiderPages | 2.1 M | 0.9% |
| Yellow Book | 1.5 M | 0.6% |
| Open List | 1.5 M | 0.6% |
| Dex Knows | 1.2 M | 0.5% |
| Yellow Bot | 900 K | 0.4% |
| Yellow.com | 920 K | 0.4% |
| MagicYellow | 750 K | 0.3% |
| 50 States | 390 K | 0.2% |
| Kudzu | 560 K | 0.2% |
| YellowUSA | 420 K | 0.2% |
| Judys Book | 200 K | 0.1% |
| iBegin | 180 K | 0.1% |
As a kind of comparison, YellowPages.ca reaches 4.7% of Canada.
Color me surprised at CitySearch being #1.
Update:
I added 50states.com to the list – if I miss any other, let me know.
I will admit that it is domain based. So sites like HelloMetro get lost because of their multi-domain approach. Alas nothing I can do about it.
I can also say that the #s for iBegin (our site) is a bit off, so you should take these #s with a grain of salt.

This is looking at a singlle domain for stats. We own 1500 city guides with their own Yellow Page data. i.e. http://www.HelloChicago.com http://www.HelloSeattle.com http://www.HelloBoston.com. Combined we get over 3.4 million unqiue visitors a month.
This is why we usually fly under the radar when these type studies are done.

This study must only be considering one domain. I know for a fact that YELLOWPAGES.COM is an entire netowork that includes AOL IYP, Yahoo Local, Yahoo IYP, 411.COM, Areaguides.net, Mapquest, MSN Live, addresses.com etc. There’s no way that a network like that comes 2nd to any url on your list.

Have you ever used that yellowpages site? first of all, it’s horrible. secondly….that should tell you that of people typing in the direct domain names that all of the money that at&t has sunk into advertising yp.com ISNT WORKING….. noone likes yellowpages anymore….wonrg url, wrong name, site is horrible = less uniques.

I wouldn’t have guessed the #1 spot, not even with a cheat sheet. I expected DexKnows to be a little higher as well, at least higher than Yelp and Local.com -

Actually, yellowpages.ca in Canada reaches 42% of the population with a unique visitor count of about 8 million per month. According to comscore, Yellow Pages Group network is the 8th largest in Canada, and the largest wholly Canadian owned network in Canada. For idea’s on how to do it right, see Yellow Pages Group.

[...] The IYP’s are fighting an incredibly difficult battle, because they’re stuck in a Catch-22 of sorts. Google is the default Internet Yellow Pages for most people. In order to get increased visibility, they have to advertise on TV and other non-Internet media (which seems like a real LOSER of an idea, if you ask me), advertise on Google for an incredible number of Local Search phrases (never a good idea to be beholdin’ to your largest competitor for traffic). But Ahmed Farooq of TechSoapbox and iBegin has put together a great chart of IYP reach according to Google. [...]
